Spotsylvania Supervisors have voted to advertise a 90 cent tax rate. That's the equalized rate that is four cents above the current rate. The advertised rate means when the final budget is adopted later this spring the tax rate can be lower, but not higher than 90 cents. County Administrator Doug Barnes said going forward with the equalized rate would give the board flexibility. "When you advertise the equalized rate it gives the board more options to consider,” Barnes said. Supervisor Gary Skinner said, "These are worst case scenarios. We can always vote to lower it." Supervisors Ross, Heidig and McLaughlin favored waiting to set a tax rate. McLaughlin said he felt "rushed." Ross said he needed more time to look over the budget.
